Jan Willem De Vriend gets Golden RecordOn Sunday November 29th 2009 Jan Willem de Vriend and Combattimento Consort Amsterdam will be given a Golden Record for their version of the Weihnachts-Oratorium (Cd & Book on Challenge Classics) of J.S. Bach. The Golden Record is handed out by Hans Flupsen of the well known music programme on television called Vrije Geluiden. Here a brief first reaction by Jan Willem de Vriend in Dutch

Weihnachtsoratorium
Jan Willem de Vriend short interview (in Dutch)How does Jan Willem de Vriend divide his time between the Combattimento Consort and Orkest van het Oosten (Netherlands Symphony Orchestra)? He makes very consious decisions in the dividing of his time between these two. For example this morning he has to be here, for a television appearance and after that make this short video-interview with us and tonight he will play in Drachten with Combattimento Consort Amsterdam. In the time in between he will not lay back and do nothing. Then he is busy for example planning new things (programmatic) for next season. In that way one can prepare all one has to do step by step and is it possible to do more things at a time. He likes to do this work very much and it all comes naturally. Of course with Combattimento they play a lot of pieces which have for example never been published or the orchestration is not finished yet and which need a lot of work. Jan Willem de Vriend usually prepares this work in advance in such a way that it is possible for him and the other ensemblemembers to look together at what has to be changed or added and that they can rehearse it together. This takes a lot of time. With the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra you have about sixty people in front of you and then one can not ask 'how would you do this and that'. That's is out of the question. So it is a very different way of working, you have to come straight to the point. With the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra we perform Mahler, Paganini, Mozart, Nielsen etc. and with Combattimento it is the 17th and 18th Century music we focus on.
How do you do this with the Combattimento Consort, is there a clear working together to study the music?
Yes, many times we do not know before we start working with a piece how it will sound exactly and how it is instrumentated, so I prepare it in such a way that we can work together and experiment with the music. Then we find out what the best thing is to do. This is also very much an aspect of that time, the 17th and 18th Century. The Kapelmeister in that time was the leader of the orchestra. If there was a very good piece which was to be performed in another city, let´s say Dresden, in that particular city there was another orchestra, other musicians with different possibilities, and a different concerthall. The Kapelmeister had again to prepare the score for this particular situation. With the Combattimento Cosort it works the same way, we have to, with every particular piece, look how we can play it the best way
