The Matangi Quartet has won the third price on the fifth international chamber music-contest JOSEPH JOACHIM 2008 (15 November) in Weimar.
After two rounds Matangi came into one of the fifth final places, with three String Quartets and two piano trios. The first price was won by the Polish/German Quarrel Quartet, the second was for the German Leibniz Trio. The jury clarified that the levels of these final winners were very close to each other.
Matangi was praised by its feeling for style, its concentrated team-playing and its warm clang. Even the manager of the Hochschule für Musik FRANS LISZT complimented the Quartet in Weimar, organist of the contest. There was praise for the special instruments of Matangi, those are all from Dutch cut. The cello and the first violin of the quartet are made free loan by the National Music Instruments Found.
On the 16th of November the official awards were handed out, where the three winners gave a collective concert that even got recorded and was broadcasted live by the Mitteldeutschen Rundfunk. Matangi was allowed to take place in this competition by permission of the ‘Stichting Cultuurfonds Soetelieve’.
