There is something exhilarating about people and things that are a little bit out of the ordinary. Whether they are different because they are from another culture, exceptional in their talents or exceptional within their limitations,  these rare birds are an important part of what makes art art. Our featured guests – multitalented Czech violinist Iva Bittová, street musician and cittern-virtuoso Luc Arbogast, four art students from De Witte Olifant and asylum seekers Karwan Mustafa and Sinan Arat - are all living proof that it is possible to be different and yet make a difference with one’s talent.

As has become tradition, we also invited young composers to draw inspiration from this year’s theme. Our call resulted in 150 contributions of rare individuality. After an exciting competition with a thrilling finale at the Schouwburg in Almere, four winners were selected to perform with their fellow musicians and the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.
They are Pelle van Esch (age 10, from Gouda), Matthijs Stauttener (age 17, from Hoofddorp), Chantal Brunt (age 15, from Driezum) and the band Big Blind (from Sneek)

Wij worden blij van mensen en dingen die nét een beetje anders zijn. Of je nu uit een andere cultuur komt, uitblinkt in je specialisme, of in je beperking; vreemde vogels geven de kunsten juist een bijzonder gezicht. Onze gastsolisten, de Tsjechische alleskunner Iva Bittová, straatmuzikant en virtuoos op de cistre Luc Arbogast, vier kunstenaars van De Witte Olifant en Karwan Mustafa en Sinan Arat verblijvend in AZC Alkmaar, laten zien dat ook als je anders bent je iets bijzonders te vertellen kan hebben en creatief talent het verschil maakt. Lang leve de vreemde vogels. Ode aan de kunst!

Ook dit jaar gingen de jonge componisten met het thema Vreemde vogels aan de slag. Er zijn 150 eigenzinnige composities geschreven. Na spannende voorrondes en een spectaculaire finale in Schouwburg Almere staan vandaag Pelle van Esch (10 jaar uit Gouda),  Matthijs Stauttener (17 jaar uit Hoofddorp), Chantal Brunt (15 jaar uit Driezum) en de band Big Blind (uit Sneek) samen met hun medemuzikanten én met de musici van het NBE op het podium van Het Concertgebouw. Jelle Visser, Marco C. de Bruin en Fons Merkies ondersteunden de jonge componisten bij het arrangeren van hun stuk voor het NBE.
