Beijing
Op Beijing Airport werden we afgehaald door Zhang Yu, een chinese dame van de organisatie die een gedeelte van de tour ism Susanna heeft geboekt. Zhang Yu (uitgesproken als Zang Tsju) zal ons de rest van de tour vergezellen en af en toe als tolk optreden. Dat is wel practisch in een land waar de meesten geen engels spreken, van organisaties tot hotelmedewerkers tot geluidstechnici. Voor we in het hotel incheckten was het al weer avond, kortom: weer lekker eten. Wat is het eten hier ontzettend goed en wat jammer dat de chinese restaurants niet meer hiervan ook in Nederland serveren. Het is ook gewoon meer zoals het is: zo drijft er in een kippengerecht ook regelmatig een kippenkop. Verder bleek een besteld gerecht kippenpoten te zijn, maar dat waren ook de werkelijke tenen. Ziet eruit als gefrituurde chips, maar blijkt dat je die bijna als een salmiaklollie aflikt, maar dan heel vet (niet mijn favoriet, haha). Immens grote restaurants en, net als in Nederland, vlotte bediening en service. Bijna onbegrijpelijk, gezien het grote aanbod op de menukaart. Aan de andere kant maakt dat het kiezen soms extra moeilijk...
De volgende ochtend iets waar je op tour niet zo vaak aan toe komt: het bezoeken van een heuse Tibetaanse tempel, het plein van de hemelse vrede en de verboden stad. Zelf vind ik het leven van alle dag gadeslaan het meest interessante op reis. Vanuit de metro of taxi, alle straattaferelen. De enorme hoeveelheid fietsen, 18 vierkante meter groene kool en evenzoveel prei voor een woonhuis opgestapeld om te verkopen, en natuurlijk, de enorme hoeveelheid Chinezen. Bijna geen blanke of anders gekleurde medemens te ontdekken in dit land. Tot nu toe tenminste.
8 november was ‘s avonds het concert in The Star Live Club, een soort van heuse poptempel, zeer welbesteed aan Gatecrash. Gepresenteerd als Nederlands jazzquartet, maar wat ik zelf een steeds groter been in de popmuziek vind hebben staan. Alles picobello verzorgd. Goede installatie, kundige en welwillende technici. Een mooie banner boven het podium met Gatecrash in heuse karakters. Alleen....tien minuten voor het concert was er nog niemand binnen....ai.....onbekende band in nieuw land?
En ineens waren er toch zomaar 150 man. Een prettig aantal, gezien het formaat van de zaal.
Het concert was geweldig en heel relaxed. Jasper had de grootste kit gekregen waar hij ooit op had gespeeld en ik heb hem nog nooit zo vet horen klinken. Prettig publiek wat luidruchtig applaudisseerde en zeer aandachtig luisterde. Een aantal daarvan kwam 'Ni Hao' zeggen na afloop en vertellen dat ze erg genoten hadden.
