Tokyo, Japan
We hadden een lange vlucht voor de kiezen: eerst 6 uur naar Singapore, tussenstop en dan nog 7 uur naar Tokyo. We zijn allemaal behoorlijk gaar.In het vliegtuig komt het besef dat ik een enorm cadeau in mijn leven ben tegengekomen: de band Gatecrash. Jasper, Jeroen en Gulli zijn niet alleen mijn favoriete musici, maar stuk voor stuk zijn het zeer aimabele mensen en goede teamwerkers die prettig in de omgang zijn. Je hebt in zo’n maand tenslotte toch een soort van huwelijk met elkaar. Het tweede cadeau is Susanna, onze agente. Het matched prima tussen de band en haar.Susanna is zo iemand die alles makkelijker voor je maakt. Ze is bovendien een heel prettig mens in de omgang, kan leiding geven zonder de baas te moeten zijn op een hele sympathieke manierZe heeft alleen soms moeite met, hoe zal ik het zeggen....het taalgebruik van mannen onder elkaar, haha.... Daar wordt ze dan ook regelmatig op getest.
Eenmaal in Tokyo hadden we de rest van de avond vrij. De ‘rekening’ van het touren en uitbundige leven werd mij de volgende dag gepresenteerd toen ik pas om 14.30 uur ‘s middags wakker werd. Heel uitzonderlijk voor mij. Ik ben altijd redelijk vroeg uit de veren. Buiten op straat viel het grote contrast met India meteen op. Hier is alles schoon en rustig, de auto's rijden netjes in de laan, en je hoort ze bijna niet.
Vrijdagavond 27 november: ons eerste optreden in de Pit Inn. Een redelijk kleine club waar niet veel mensen waren. Dat is soms wennen in een ander land, waar je nog niet hetzelfde hebt bereikt als in je eigen land. Met de cd’s zat het aardig tegen. We hadden in Japan een deal dat de distributeur aldaar ons cd's zou leveren. Dat is dus niet gebeurd. En er waren ook geen interviews geregeld. Publiciteit moest je met een loep zoeken in de swingjournal. Lastig en behoorlijk fustrerend. Hier ligt nog een les voor mij, hoe hier mee om te gaan en hoe dit in de toekomst te tackelen.
Tot mijn grote verassing was Theodossi Spassov uit Bulgarije aanwezig. Hij is een fantastische Kavalspeler en festival organisator. Hij nodigde ons meteen uit voor zijn festival. Ook een journalist van de Swingjournal was van de partij om te resenceren.
Een ander cadeau uit de hemel was Eigen Kino. Een hele verlegen aardige man die uit eigen beweging een prachtige flyer had gemaakt en rondgestuurd, met de namen en adressen van de plekken waar we speelden in Japan. Totaal onbaatzuchtig gedaan, echt ontroerend. Ik moest hem bijna dwingen om hem te mogen betalen hiervoor.Hij kwam drie avonden filmen, klik op onderstaande links voor het mooie resultaat:
