Kerryown Concert House
The guy at the hotel counter who checked us in the night before was a real big guy and that not in the healthiest way, ha ha. He explained very elaborately about the breakfast and how delicious and good it was. When I was too late this morning there was another guy behind the counter even bigger than the other who showed me what was left. Only the fattest blueberry muffins with a huge amount of butter and sugar. Did you know by the way that they even sometimes use sugar in toothpaste ???
Happily that there was a very tasty and healthy Korean restaurant close to the hotel that served lunch. That ginger tea was revitalising after, eh, the vodka tonics the night before…
Tonight we will play at Kerryown Concert House which is a plain old house in a normal neigbourhood refurbished to use as a concert venue. A very nice performance space. Michael J. Nastos , a journalist who writes in the All Music Guide, announced us. Marc Andren, a total jazzfreak, was incredibly enthousiastic about us when we played last year in Detroit in the Art Centre of Detroit. (Detroit is around the corner here) We played then for a handful of people and it was super weird. Marc was so excited about that concert though that he helped convince the organizers of Kerrytown to book us. Around 75 people visited our concert that night, a very full house (in fact, a record amount ! ) Very special for me was that the unbelievable trumpeter Louis Smith was in my audience. He is a great example for trumpet playing and improvisation for the next generation. My music and improvising is very different from the whole bebop school where he is from, but still he came to hear me. This is also America. Although it’s maybe not your cup of tea, check it out anyhow..
Louis had a stroke for a couple of years ago and his speaking ability had been ‘touched’ by the stroke, that’s why it was hard to understand him when he talked to me and his wife Lulu had to help with our conversation. Louis doesn’t play anymore. Thanks for coming up Louis!
