Drake University, Des Moines

Harmen and I had to clear up some things about what happened just before we arrived at Des Moines and that went very well. If you have a pretty strong connection through the music the rest can follow easily. At 3 pm we were gave a workshop for some music students at Drake University. I think the best thing you can do for your studies is to listen to the language. That’s what you learn the most from. If the students visit a concert of yours, and after that attend the workshop to ask some questions you can give music examples to explain. In Des Moines ther were almost no concerts going on so I was very surprised that only one of the 10 students at the workshop had gone to our concert. That was because their teacher’s opinion was that the rehearsal he gave at the same time was more important that attending our concert. Weeeeelllllll,  I don’t know about this. I felt a little competitive reaction from this teacher who was....indeed....a trumpeter himself. Anyhow....maybe I was the one who learned the most from this workshop by listening to Anton and Harmen, who had a lot of brillant information and brought it across very succinctly.  I was also able to encourage and play with little Aidan, a trumpet player of perhaps 11 years old. So I was a happy man when the workshop was finished.
Abe took us home where Jackie cooked for us. Incredibly delicious. Meanhwile Ab showed us musicians (Susanna was upstairs yakking with Jackie) his basement – all the jazz  cd’s you can think of.  And this in Des Moines, Iowa !!!   I have never felt so invited and welcome in my entire life as with these sweet people. Thank you so much both for taking us in, Abe and Jackie!!!!!!
