Twins, Washington DC
We had a God-awful morning call at 4.30 because of an early flight to Washington DC where we are going to play in Twins, the same place were we started our first tour in the USA. At the airport I realise more and more that the only food that you can buy is sweet or fat or both. And when the food is healthy, you get too much. Last time I was in the USA I gained a lot of weight. I am trying to avoid it and stay with fruit in the morning. I realise also that it’s a way of life to eat like this. Not for nothing you see so many overweight people here.
The difference between Europe and USA is that Americans take this snackjunkfood seriously, while we see it as real snackfood.
Anyhow, back to the business, or let’s say, no business. Although we had good publicity, thanks to Ann Braithwaite, there were only a few people at Twins this year. That was a pity and I remembered the words of my teacher Dusko Goycovitch: You have to pay your dues.
A few years ago I was in Tilburg playing with Harmen at the local club Paradox. Our concert started later than the concert of trumpet star Randy Brecker, who played at 013. Because we played late we could see the first set of Randy Brecker and his band. In the big hall where you could have around 600 people there were not even 25 people in the audience that night. Randy came on stage, saw what happened, he rolled his eyes and said: ‘Oh, just one of those nights’ and started playing very well.
Well, that’s what we did. What else can you do?
In fact, you play in the first place for yourself. You share this feeling and give this feeling to the musicians with whom you ar sharing the stage. You share this good time together with your audience. It’s a cosmic power who develops. Just as in a football game were everybody is happy when his team scores a point. When everybody feels this joy you get the accumulating factor and it makes everybody even happier. So it is all about sharing and connection. It works exactly the same for music. That’s why it’s more satisfying to play for more people.
So...it was one of those nights for us but we just played our asses off and had a good time, hahaaaaaa!!!!!!
