Charlottesville
Today is a pretty relaxed day. We arrived in DC on time and drove about 3 hours through the state of Virginia to Charlottesville, a student city where we are going to play at the university. It was a beautiful sunny day and the landscape was tremendous. Charlottesville happens to be a cosy place, and the University was designed by Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, (We the People) himself !
The concert was in a hall of the university, named Brooks Hall after a man who decided, after the Civil War, that Southern Universities needed to have Natural History Museums. So there are many Brooks Halls throughout the South. They had never produced a concert in that hall, so the piano was brought in especially and it was very much an experiment.
Again a small crew of the Charlottesville Jazz Society took care of us. The man that in fact brought us – through dogged determination love of the music, was Steve Huff, a neurologist. We had a full house ! Steve said to me that it was like the movie “the Field of Dreams” – if you build it they will come ! I had some nice talks afterwards with a few trumpet students. Everybody is very curious about my trumpet. Because the instrument sounds so well and looks gorgeous. Truly I am a proud that it is a trumpet made in the Netherlands by Hub van Laar, a friend of mine and an excellent craftsman. He is getting more and more famous in “trumpet land” for the high quality of his flugelhorns and trumpets. With great hospitality the crew took us out for dinner at an Italian restaurant and bar - invited by the owner who is a music lover. It was our last concert in the USA this time around. Tomorrow we go back to Canada to play the last two concerts of this wonderful tour.
