Ottawa
In the morning we took a train to Ottawa. The ride took some 2 hours and we enjoyed the landscape. So much space in this country and the nature looks overwelming. Allistar, our artist liason of the Ottawa Jazz Festival met us at the train station and took us to the very nice Crowne Plaza in the center of town. A little walk in Ottawa showed me that I find this city not so happening as Montreal. The atmosphere feels little colder and neater. Maybe because it’s an administrative city – it’s the capital of Canada after all. Ottawa is more Anglo-Saxon as Montreal is more French-European. The concert was in a beautiful place, part of the National Arts Center. The Fourth stage is an intimate hall, cosy seating with tables. There were some 150 people who showed up and who ate out of our hands. The concert was serious as well as humorous which is the norm at our performances. Afterwards we got several comments like “I never heard such serious music played so well and so silly” Silly? I take it as a compliment. Ha ha ! A lot of musicians take their music soooooo seriously. That’s what people (musicians as well as the audience) have been conditioned to expect, that a performance of jazz or chamber music must be serious. I agree with that, but…… Evidently they were at first taken aback that music can be fun, funny as well as expertly played. A virtuoso performance need not be dead serious. Sorry, Mr.Marsalis, with all due respect, it doesn’t always have to be ‘The Majesty of Jazz”. In any case, we left ourselves and our audience in a cheerful mood. For me it’s essential to be present in life with an attitude of good nature. Luckily Catherine O’Grady was there as well. She is the head of Ottawa Jazz Festival, who was the presenter of our concert – she had already heard from her colleague Ken Pickering in Vancouver that we were a treat. So I have the sneaking suspicion that we will be back in Canada before long. Another nice surprise was Rick Rangno, who came to the concert after being tipped by Erik Veldkamp, a trumpet colleague from Holland, to check me out. Thanks Erik! Rick knew I that play the Van Laar trumpet. Hub van Laar is an outstanding trumpet maker from the south of my native country. He is becoming more and more known around the world and I hope I can contribute to that. The instrument on which I play is called the Oiram, and with it I can drive 300 km per hour instead of 200 km with the same energy…(and no speed limit !) ha ha
